Low Emission Technology Australia (LETA) supports the release of Western Australia’s carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) Action Plan.
The Action Plan, announced yesterday by the Western Australian Premier Roger Cook, marks the first state-led approach of its kind in Australia and provides a model for the Federal Government as well as other Australian states and territories to support this important technology.
Western Australia’s Action Plan will accelerate the CCUS industry by attracting investment, enhancing policy certainty and supporting the development of new and emerging technology.
The Western Australian Government also announced $26million in funding for two local CCUS projects which are being developed to prevent millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere.
“We welcome Western Australia’s approach to the vitally important CCUS industry,” said Mark McCallum, Chief Executive of LETA.
“Deployment of CCUS is the key to reducing emissions without abandoning the critical industries that are the backbone of Australia’s economy and deliver hundreds of thousands of Australian jobs.
“LETA has been investing in CCUS technology for more than a decade to significantly reduce emissions and support the transition to a low emission global economy.
“Around the world, Governments, including in the US, UK and EU, and major trading partners like Japan and Korea, are investing billions of dollars in CCUS technologies and have implemented regulatory frameworks to support the decarbonisation efforts of large critical industries like steel, cement and power generation.
“LETA encourages the Federal Government, as well as other Australian states and territories to follow the example set by Western Australia, and by nations around the world to support the adoption of this crucial technology that delivers a net zero pathway and protects jobs and industry.”
LETA remains committed to collaborating with government, industry, and our international trading partners to further drive the deployment of CCS.
