CO2CRC OTWAY STAGE 4
The CO2CRC Otway Stage 4 project is the latest research initiative at the Otway International Test Centre in Victoria, Australia. Supported by LETA, this project tests new ways to reliably and efficiently store emissions underground. The main goal is to demonstrate and develop focused reservoir management technologies on sub-optimal reservoirs, to improve CO2 injection, storage, and monitoring efficiencies, thereby materially lowering costs for commercial CO2 storage projects.
Why emissions storage matters
Finding more effective ways to safely store emissions underground is a crucial part of reducing overall emissions. By securely storing emissions, we can keep them out of the atmosphere, helping protect our environment.
Where is it happening?
Stage 4 project activities are underway at the Otway International Test Centre in Victoria, Australia. Universities and research partners from around the world are supporting the project through data analysis and remote collaboration on field campaigns.
How does this fit with LETA’s mission?
LETA is committed to supporting practical solutions that can reduce emissions from industries whose emissions are hard to abate. Through its support for CO2CRC’s Otway Stage 4 project, LETA is contributing to world-leading research that can make carbon storage safe, cost-effective, and easier to deploy. This investment reflects LETA’s mission to help industries lower their emissions efficiently and responsibly.
What’s next?
The Otway Stage 4 project has successfully completed its first CO₂ injection activity, with data analysis now underway to verify the results. These findings will inform future field campaigns and help refine best practices for safe, cost-effective carbon storage, reinforcing LETA’s commitment to advancing practical emissions reduction solutions in Australia and beyond.
