CCUS is widely recognised as a critical technology for achieving global emissions reduction goals. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has stated that reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions without CCUS will be “all but impossible”, while the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights its role in limiting global warming.
This report, prepared by LETA, for the Coal Industry Advisory Board (CIAB) Working Group, explores China’s approach to CCUS, focusing on two major case studies that showcase:
✅ Government-backed innovation accelerating CCUS deployment
✅ Significant cost reductions through learning-by-doing
✅ Technical advancements making retrofitting coal-fired power plants viable
✅ The role of international collaboration in scaling CCUS adoption
With over 100 CCUS projects in operation or development, China is demonstrating how CCUS can be effectively integrated into energy and industrial sectors to support net zero commitments while maintaining energy security.
